Justice used to be about what was proved in the courtroom. These days unprecedented forces are assaulting the burden of proof and the fundamental right of “innocent until proven guilty.” Those forces are the court of public opinion, Twitter, blogs, Facebook and other social, print and television media. She points out our inclination to pass blame as an outlet for our discomfort or uncertainty. Finding online communities that share our biases and prejudices can bring a sense of relief. But it is nothing more than a feedback loop based on confirmation biases and preconceived notions which leads to scapegoating rather than a search for truth.
