Midshipman Henry Gallant at the Academy
“Still a boy, not yet a man,” is the opening line in the ninth installment of the series. The story reveals the growth of Gallant during his time at the academy, where he suffers from hazing and youthful challenges. Then, his unique abilities allow him to glimpse a disturbing sighting in space. It creates his interest in UFOs which turns out to be prescient. “There’s something out there,” he said, sending him on a new dangerous adventure.
Spoliation
Captain Jonas Stryker narrowly escapes jail due to a corrupt system and is hired by a dying man nominally to collect asteroids for their minerals. However, he soon finds he must stop a shadowy corporate group called The Board, who employ space piracy, terrorism, and even weaponised asteroids to overthrow the Federation government. Set in Lagrange points, space stations, the Moon and outback Australia, it is a fast-moving story with some speculative future technology. If you were interested in the NASA attempt to alter the orbit of the asteroid Dimorphos, you might be interested in a story of greed, corruption and honour, together with the science of asteroids.
The Cranio-Genesis Project: Dawn of a New World Order
The clandestine Cranio-Genesis Project, shuttered over a decade ago, carries mysterious secrets that unknowingly have changed the world forever. The successful revival of twelve brain-dead children through electromagnetic stimulation of their cerebral cortex begins as a medical breakthrough, then morphs into an unintended advancement in human evolution. With the world not yet ready to face its future self, the project’s details and its children are hidden away. Unknown to newly elected U.S. President Paul Schmidt, an adversary covertly extracted the program’s secrets. They’ve used it to develop an unrivaled military force and bait the president into war. Drs. Peter and Heidi Davidson, the husband-and-wife team of neuroscientists who led Cranio-Genesis, emerge to help President Schmidt unravel the mystery of the new capability and its tie to their former program. Unable to counter the growing threat of this new lone superpower, the twelve children become the president’s last hope to strike back before it’s too late.
