Biography
Katy Munger
Katy Munger is an American writer best known for writing the Casey Jones mystery series as well as the Hubbert & Lil mysteries and the Dead Detective series. All of her series were originally published in traditional format by a Big Five publishing house and in numerous foreign countries. After receiving the rights back to her work, she has re-issued and continued her series on Amazon through Thalia Press. While she now writes all of her three series under her real name, in the past Munger has written under the pen names Gallagher Gray (the Hubbert & Lil mystery series) and Chaz McGee (the Dead Detective series).
All of her series feature rich characterizations and fast-paced plots while honoring the conventions of crime fiction, but each of her series is slightly different in tone as follows:
The Hubbert & Lil mystery series is a gently-humorous cozy series featuring 86-year old Auntie Lil and her buttoned down 50-something nephew, T.S. Hubbert. The tone is warm and the books themselves would be rated G on the movie ratings scale. The humor is reminiscent of P.G. Wodehouse and the late Charlotte MacLeod.
The Casey Jones mysteries are contemporary and feature a strong female PI (who does not take herself too seriously) along with a cast of supporting characters representing the many types of cultures and individuals that make up the modern American South. They are set in the Triangle area of North Carolina. While primarily humorous in tone, all of the books include a deeper emotional component to the plot and have been praised for their depth. The books in this series would be rated PG-13 on the movie ratings scale. According to author Janet Evanovich, "Casey Jones joins the ranks of smart and gutsy heroines. The South will never be the same. Don't miss her."
The Dead Detective series is based on police procedural but includes a strong paranormal component as well as many elements of a traditional thriller. This series examines many of the deeper questions about life, especially the battle between Good and Evil, and has been praised for its insight and the inspirational aspects of its plots. Because of its deeper content and sometimes dark themes, it would likely be rated PG on the movie ratings scale.
